Ants are the most invasive pests in homes and ways on how to get rid of ants in home is a subject that has probably plagued humanity since the days of the cavemen. There are different varieties of ants, but the ones that we really want to get rid of are the ants that set up home in our homes, and then refuse to leave.
Observing ants, whether black ants, sugar ants, carpenter ants, indoors or outdoors ants, makes you notice that their main activity seems to be scavenging for food – and that is what attracts them into everyone’s house. So your primary defense on getting rid of ants are the following:
- Ensure that any food left lying outside is kept in airtight containers.
- Clean kitchen counters thoroughly as soon as you finish cooking.
- Clear and clean the dining area as soon as the meal is over and sweep up any crumbs as well, if you have a severe ant problem.
- Do the washing up right away.
- Wipe up spills immediately.
Ants are particularly attracted to sugar, grains and protein so in order to prevent them from infesting your home is to wipe up sweet spills instantly, and clean very thoroughly after preparing meals where you have used flour or meat.
Basically what you need to do, is not leave even a crumb lying around, because ants seem to have an amazing radar for food – try leaving a drop of honey on your seemingly clear counter, and watch the army arrive within five minutes, as if you had rung a dinner bell !
What ants don’t like are vinegar, bleach; strong smelling spices like cloves, cinnamon, black pepper and bay leaves.
Wipe your kitchen counters with vinegar once you are through with cooking and put a little bleach in the water when you swab your kitchen floors. You could also wipe the dining table surface and legs with vinegar, since they seem to love hanging out there !
To get rid of ants in the kitchen, scatter a few whole cloves, pieces of cinnamon or bay leaves on your food shelves and in kitchen drawers. This usually keeps them away, but you may need to renew the spices regularly, as they seem to lose their strong aromas after a while.
Getting rid of ants permanently will require you to take the war into their camp. The ants have set up home in your home and you will know where their doorways are by the ant traffic going in and out. The obvious thing to do here would be to caulk or seal up these cracks and holes. What is particularly successful is to spray an effective insecticide into the holes and cracks first.
Keep your caulk or sealer handy, spray the insecticide hard into the crevice, and seal it immediately. If you do this every time you find a new ant hole, you will soon see their numbers diminish.
The interesting thing here is if you know how to get rid of ants in your home, you will find that you can easily get rid of other household pests as well. Most insects are averse to the same smells and what has worked on ants may also work on other pests.
